One gym in Vancouver, Body Exchange, actually screens potential clients over the phone and bans non-plus-size women from joining. (Men aren't allowed, either.) The goal is for the space to be a "save haven" for heavier clients, founder and CEO Louise Green told The Province. "Many of our clients have not had successful fitness pasts so I can see the anxiety before we get started and I can see the relief and happiness after we finish," she said. "People are often too fearful to become active. There wasn't a model that offered camaraderie. I used to walk into fitness classes where nobody would even say ‘Hi.' This has got to be fun or it's not going to work."

Green said three types of people join her gym: women who are "idle," women who used to work out but have put on weight in recent years, and the "do or dies" who need to get fit for medical reasons. But all have one thing in common: they don't want to get patronizing side-eye glances when they're on the treadmill. "It's intimidating going into a gym setting," one satisfied customer said. "I honestly think some people in a gym setting are judgmental to people who are overweight or have a different body type."

Jezebel, The Province

Can you imagine the outrage if a gym tried to exclude "plus-sized" members? This sort of thing only fuels size discrimination. (Obviously, there'd be little money in that).

Where I grew up had a gym for everyone I guess, but it was aimed at non-skinny people, it was called curvy girls. Thing is, it got shut down because the sign was purple with white writing, with the exact same font as Cadbury
I don't like the way the one you posted says it's for idle people though...if people were that "idle"...as in the "idle" as this gym is describing, they would be too idle to be going to a gym...they'd be better off just opening a gym, which didn't discriminate against people, and the people who they describe as "idle" would be more inclined to go

Nobody wants to be described that way, and the people, whether they are as the description or not, are not going to go there. At least if they think like I do. I'd rather go to a leisure centre gym where there are people of all sizes, than one that pretty much says (imo) that they are for lazy sods...

I'd like to know what would happen, hypothetically, if someone went to this gym fitting the categorisation required for membership then proceeded to lose weight/change body shape/etc, so they no longer met the requirements.. Do they get turfed out then?

I don't think they're needed! I've been heavy at least half of my adult life and I've never had an issue participating with everyone else. People don't look at me funny or not include me...maybe it's just the mid-west or something.

If I can't keep up it doesn't even tend to be about my weight. I have joint problems that I've have since I was about twelve. (I fear they may be turning into arthritis now in my late 20s).

I kind of understand it, like the gyms that are for women only. It can be intimidating to go to a gym where everyone is so "out of your league." That can scare people away.
