Tips to Make You Happier
- by Shieldwolf
1. You are not the immortal being you conceive yourself to be. You are meant to suffer, you are meant to have problems, you are meant to get old and wrinkled and then die.
2. If you can't be happy with a never ending progression of problems, difficulties and suffering, then you can't be happy, because that's life.
3. Think of your life as a story. It should first and foremost be interesting and exciting.
4. These things are more important than safety or the absence of pain, because this is the root of that delighted feeling of "Wow!" that makes trials and tribulations worthwhile.
5. Engage in positive self talk. Do it ritualistically. Personally, I use passwords to achieve this. Something like: I Like My Job And Am Proud Of What I Do translates to a password of ILMJAAPOWID. You'll say it to yourself every time you type in your password.
6. Smile at strangers and pay them compliments, then walk away without asking for anything, even their name. Delight particularly in those that react with confusion/suspicion to your kind words.
7. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS assume that people are upset with something unrelated to you and aren't upset with you personally until you confirm otherwise.
8. NEVER NEVER NEVER allow yourself to be exposed to commercially driven mass media of any kind, and particularly never watch advertisements. EVER. It is engineered by the worlds most skilled psychologists to make you feel dissatisfied with your life as it is so you will go buy things.
9. Make mistakes. Mistakes are important. It doesn't matter how smart or skilled or talented you are, if you don't make mistakes, you're vegetating in your comfort zone instead of living.
10. Lose everything you have and get it back again. For one single moment before you die, be a solitary human standing alone in the world with no trappings.
11. Understand that other people are not obliged to care about your feelings. Your feelings are entirely outside of their control, and entirely your responsibility. Forcing responsibility for your feelings on other people is an act of aggression just like punching them in the mouth, don't be surprised if they respond in kind.
