BITING ANOREXIA

- A new book written by Lucy Howard Taylor

Lucy Howard Taylor is a wonderful, expressive writer, and I am proud to introduce her first book. She and I have been friends at opposite sides of the planet for years. I made my journey to recovery by building this website, and she made hers in parallel writing her book, "Biting Anorexia". She is proof-positive that recovery is possible, even if getting there is difficult. I have every hope that more people will stand up and proudly represent recovery. This book is currently in publication in Australia and New Zealand, but also available in South Africa (And in the UK through amazon.uk). The book will be available in the USA through New Harbinger sometime in 2009. (More details on that to come soon.)

Lucy is a long-time member of We Bite Back. She creates beautiful poetry as well as photography, and is very eloquent in her speech. (See interview above from Sunrize in AU.)

I had the honour of writing the Forward.

Lucy Howard Taylor - author of Biting Anorexia and one of the first members of We BIte BackBiting Anorexia - written by Lucy Howard Taylor‘My name is Lucy. I am in recovery from anorexia nervosa and major depression, each of which almost killed me.’

So begins this extraordinary depiction by an 18-year-old woman of her descent into the tortured existence of anorexia and her arduous and remarkable recovery from it.

Biting Anorexia is unique in that much of it was written while the author was in the grips of the condition. This searingly honest account details Lucy’s struggle to literally claw herself back from the point of no return and then to overcome an almost harder battle … that of recovery. Anorexia nervosa is the most fatal of all psychiatric illnesses – and recovery the biggest hurdle. As Lucy says: ‘To challenge an eating disorder, or any mental illness, is to wage a prolonged, painful and devastating war … it is the most confusing and emotionally draining part of the illness.’

Lucy’s penetrating insights, beautifully written and tinged with a wicked sense of black humour, have the power to capture, reveal and skewer simultaneously. This story will inspire and support those troubled with the condition, and their families and friends, the world over.
